Why I Chose Keio SFC and Japan

I left my home country for better academic opportunities in Japan. My primary choice was SFC, because it is renowned for empowering students to follow their passions and conduct research in their areas of interest. Here, everyone is free to design their career path, which is one of SFC's most distinguishing features. Also, the diversity at SFC is remarkable; for instance, the Seminar I'm in has members from over 10 countries.

Challenges and Upsides of Attending a Japanese University

I initially struggled with the Japanese language, but this quickly changed once I enrolled in the language courses offered on campus. These courses also deepened my understanding of Japanese culture. Various language labs at SFC host international events, where I made Japanese friends who helped me integrate into the community. What was particularly appealing about SFC was the advanced research labs. In my view, Japanese universities emphasize practical lessons that complement theoretical teachings. This enables students to truly comprehend course concepts rather than merely memorizing information for exams.

Comparing Learning Environments at SFC and Universities Back Home

In Eritrea, universities typically assign courses to students based on their national examination results, with a predetermined curriculum. In contrast, at SFC, aside from a few required courses in the initial semesters, students are free to create their own schedules comprised of courses that match their interests and research fields. SFC also offers a level of academic freedom that doesn't exist in my country. Students can enroll in courses from other faculties, campuses, and even other universities in Japan and abroad. I took advantage of this by enrolling in courses from the Faculty of Policy Management, the Faculty of Environment and Information Studies, and the Graduate School of Media and Governance.

Message to Prospective Students

If you are a student with diverse interests but are undecided about your path in higher education, SFC is the right place for you. You won't be taught what to think. Rather, you'll learn how to think for yourself, critically analyze information, and form your own perspectives. With the right guidance, you'll be empowered to take control of your own life's journey.
