Why I Chose Keio SFC and Japan
I relocated to Japan in 2021 when my father was transferred here for work job, and since then, I've developed a fondness for this country. Hence, I decided to continue my higher studies in Japan. Japan is renowned for its world-class universities, top-notch education system, and quality-focused industry. I applied to SFC because it is well-known for its IT and computer science courses. The main reason I chose SFC is that it offers the opportunity to focus on my major while also exploring classes from other faculties. Additionally, it offers the chance to join Seminars to develop a deeper understanding of my subject of interest.
Challenges and Upsides of Attending a Japanese University
The main challenge I face in Japan is the language barrier. Despite learning Japanese for over a year, I still find it difficult. Taking Japanese classes at SFC and talking to people has helped me build interest in learning further. However, I wish I had started learning before joining the university, as it would have made my transition smoother and helped me navigate daily life and academic responsibilities. Before university, I worried about fitting in and making connections with people from various countries. However, at SFC I was able to make amazing lifelong friendships and promising connections, enriching my experience and easing my fears. What I find attractive about Japanese universities is the manageable workload, which allows students to choose subjects of interest while maintaining a good work-life balance. I particularly appreciate Keio's mandatory PE classes. Initially, they might seem unnecessary, but they help students communicate and enjoy fun moments with classmates amidst hectic schedules. Overall, the advantages and opportunities of attending a Japanese university, particularly SFC, have far outweighed any initial concerns.
Comparing Learning Environments at SFC and Universities Back Home
The major differences between the learning environment in India and SFC include a more flexible curriculum at SFC, allowing students to choose subjects and projects of interest. SFC emphasizes a balance between academic and extracurricular activities, fostering a holistic development approach. In contrast, Indian universities often have a more rigid curriculum with a heavier workload. Additionally, SFC promotes an interactive and collaborative learning atmosphere, while Indian universities may focus more on theoretical knowledge and individual performance. I personally prefer learning through practical knowledge as I believe that helps make concepts clearer and stronger. I like the concept of joining Seminars under a professor and getting deeper and deeper into the field you are truly interested in.
